Understanding Your Medicare Options

Medicare provides important health coverage, but understanding how its different parts work together isn't always straightforward. Whether you're approaching age 65, preparing to retire, or reviewing your existing coverage, the choices you make can affect your healthcare costs and access to doctors for years to come. At Mann Advisory Services, we help people understand those choices and find coverage that fits their needs and budget.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare (Parts A and B)

Original Medicare is the foundation of Medicare coverage. Part A generally covers inpatient hospital care, while Part B covers physician services, outpatient care, and other medically necessary services. Although Original Medicare provides substantial coverage, it doesn't pay for everything. Beneficiaries are generally responsible for deductibles and coinsurance, including 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most Part B services, with no annual out-of-pocket maximum under Original Medicare alone.

Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement insurance, also known as Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare to help pay certain out-of-pocket expenses, including deductibles and coinsurance. Unlike Medicare Advantage, Medigap generally allows you to see any healthcare provider nationwide who accepts Medicare, without the restrictions of a plan network. You'll pay a separate monthly premium for this coverage, but in exchange you gain greater predictability in your healthcare expenses. For clients who can comfortably afford the premium, I generally favor this approach because of its flexibility and protection against potentially significant out-of-pocket costs. Medigap does not include prescription drug coverage, so a separate Part D plan is typically needed.1B2A6B

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans generally combine hospital and medical coverage, and many include prescription drug coverage along with additional benefits such as dental, vision, and hearing. Some plans have no additional monthly premium beyond the Medicare Part B premium, making them attractive to people looking to minimize their fixed monthly expenses. However, Medicare Advantage plans typically involve provider networks, copayments, and other out-of-pocket expenses that can accumulate throughout the year. Although these plans have an annual out-of-pocket maximum for covered Part A and Part B services, that maximum can represent a significant financial exposure. For that reason, I encourage clients to consider not just the monthly premium but also the potential total cost of their healthcare and the flexibility they want in choosing providers.

Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. If you choose Original Medicare along with a Medicare Supplement plan, you'll generally need a separate Part D policy to cover your prescriptions. Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage, although not all do. Part D plans vary in monthly premiums, covered medications, pharmacy networks, and out-of-pocket costs. A plan that works well for one person may be unnecessarily expensive for another, even when they take similar medications. That's why I encourage clients to review their prescription coverage annually, particularly during Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 through December 7). Changes in premiums, formularies, and pharmacy arrangements can make a meaningful difference in what you pay. It's also important to enroll when first eligible or maintain other creditable prescription coverage to avoid potential late-enrollment penalties.

Making The Right Decision

Making the Right Medicare Decision

Choosing the right Medicare coverage involves more than simply comparing monthly premiums. Your health, prescription medications, preferred doctors, financial circumstances, and expectations for future healthcare needs should all factor into the decision. A plan that appears inexpensive today could become costly if your healthcare needs change. It's also important to understand that switching from Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement plan later may require medical underwriting, potentially limiting your options.

At Mann Advisory Services, we help clients evaluate these choices with an emphasis on understanding both the benefits and the potential costs of each approach. I generally favor Medicare Supplement coverage for those who can comfortably afford the premiums because of the flexibility and financial predictability it offers. However, Medicare Advantage can be a reasonable alternative depending on your circumstances and priorities. My goal is not simply to help you enroll in a plan, but to help you make an informed decision that serves your needs today and in the years ahead.
